Mar 19 Thursday Nyepi (Hari Raya Nyepi, Saka New Year 1948) The Day of Silence. A national public holiday where the entire island, including the airport, shuts down for 24 hours (6 AM to 6 AM). No travel, no noise, and minimal light are permitted.

If you only remember one holiday on this list, make it Nyepi. This is the Balinese New Year and one of the most unique public holidays in the world. As a travel blogger who’s experienced a few, let me set the scene for you:

For a full 24 hours, starting at 6:00 AM, the entire island of Bali, Indonesia goes silent. Absolutely everything is shut down: the airport, all shops, traffic lights—even the internet often gets switched off in recent years! The purpose is self-reflection for the Hindu community, who follow the Balinese calendar

The day before Nyepi is the incredible Ogoh-Ogoh Parade. Massive, terrifying, and spectacularly crafted effigies of demons are paraded through the streets, accompanied by chaotic noise to banish evil spirits. You simply must see this. Then, on Nyepi itself, check yourself into a nice resort, stock up on snacks, and enjoy a day of mandatory peace and quiet. It’s an authentic, unforgettable experience.

While Nyepi is special to Bali, Indonesia, the island also celebrates all the major national holidays of Indonesia. These public holidays are governed by both the Gregorian and Islamic lunar calendar, meaning the dates change yearly for the latter, so double-check those plans!

This is the fun part! The Balinese calendar is lunar, and it hosts a ton of local Hindu holidays Bali obsesses over. While they are not officially national public holidays for the entire Indonesia public sector, these ceremonies can still slow down local life in Bali dramatically, and you should totally factor them into your trip.

The biggest recurring Balinese holiday is Galungan (the victory of dharma over adharma), which is celebrated every 210 days, followed 10 days later by Kuningan. During this period, the streets are lined with tall, beautiful bamboo poles called penjor—it’s stunning!

My Funky Fresh Tip: These dates are prime time for an authentic cultural experience! If you’re invited to a temple ceremony or a family’s holiday celebration, GO! Dress respectfully (sarong and sash are a must), and be ready for an incredible day. Just be patient on the roads, as people head back to their villages.

Listen up, fellow explorers! When you’re looking at the calendar 2025 and holidays 2026, remember that a few extra ‘collective leave’ days (or cuti bersama) often pop up around the big Islamic and national holidays. This means people get long weekends, so internal travel across Indonesia spikes. Book those fast boat tickets to the Gilis or your flight to Flores early!

Using this public holidays Bali guide, you’re all set for an authentic, culturally rich, and hassle-free trip to Bali, Indonesia. Get those dates locked in, pack your best sarong, and prepare for some truly unique holidays

Keep it Fresh, Keep it Funky, and I’ll see you on the Island of the Gods!
