Having spent a considerable amount of time exploring every nook and cranny of this incredible city, I can tell you firsthand that Hue is a great place to immerse yourself in Vietnamese culture. It’s not just a city; it’s a living, breathing museum, a testament to the country’s glorious past, and a hub of vibrant local life. From its majestic royal tombs to its bustling markets and serene pagodas, Hue offers an unforgettable adventure.

Step Back in Time: The Imperial City of Hue

First on our list, and arguably the most significant, is the Imperial City of Hue, a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sprawling large complex was once the former capital of Vietnam and the administrative center of the Nguyen Dynasty. Walking through its ancient gates, you can almost hear the echoes of emperors and concubines. It’s not just a collection of buildings; it’s a journey back to a time of imperial grandeur. 

Within the Imperial City of Hue, you’ll find the Forbidden Purple City, a once-exclusive area reserved for the emperor and his closest family. While much of it was damaged during the Vietnam War, efforts are continuously underway to restore its former glory. Don’t miss the Thai Hoa Palace, a stunning example of ancient architecture and the main building for important court ceremonies. The intricate details and sheer scale of this place are truly awe-inspiring. 

Exploring the Hue Citadel (another name for the Imperial City) is an all-day affair. Give yourself ample time to wander through the various gates, courtyards, and temples. I’ve taken countless boat rides along the Perfume River to reach it, and each time, the tranquility and beauty of the journey are just as captivating. 

The best way to get to Thien Mu Pagoda is definitely a boat trip on the Perfume River. You’ll glide past lush greenery and local life, offering a different perspective of the city. Once there, explore the beautiful gardens, the main sanctuary, and don’t forget to look for the Austin car that belonged to the monk Thich Quang Duc, who famously self-immolated in Saigon in 1963 to protest the persecution of Buddhists. This site holds immense  

historical significance and is a must-visit for anyone interested in Vietnam’s spiritual and political landscape. 

A Glimpse into Royalty: Hue’s Royal Tombs

Hue is renowned for its magnificent royal tombs, scattered amidst the picturesque landscape surrounding the city. Each tomb is a unique architectural masterpiece, reflecting the personality and philosophy of the emperor it commemorates. These aren’t just burial sites; they are elaborate complexes designed to be the eternal resting places of the Nguyen emperors, showcasing the incredible artistry and beliefs of the time. 

My personal favorites include: 

• Tomb of Minh Mang:  

 This tomb, also known as the mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang, is an incredibly harmonious blend of architecture and nature. Set amidst a beautiful lake and lush greenery, it’s a truly serene place to explore. The symmetrical design and the intricate details on the gates and pavilions are simply stunning. It’s a photographer’s dream! 

• Tu Duc Tomb:

The royal tomb of Tu Duc, or simply Tu Duc Tomb, is probably the most poetic of them all. Built by Emperor Tu Duc himself for his future resting place, it served as his summer palace during his lifetime. The complex includes temples, pavilions, and a tranquil lake, all designed to reflect his artistic and scholarly nature. It’s a great place to spend a few hours wandering and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. 

• Khai Dinh Tomb:  

 The mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh is a striking contrast to the other tombs, with a more modern, European-influenced design. While smaller in scale, its intricate mosaics made from broken glass and ceramics are absolutely mesmerizing. It’s a bit of a climb to get to the main building, but the panoramic views and the sheer opulence inside are well worth the effort.

A Feast for the Senses: Dong Ba Market

No trip to Hue is complete without diving headfirst into the vibrant chaos of Dong Ba Market. This is the largest marketin Hue and a true sensory overload in the best possible way! From the moment you step in, you’re greeted by a symphony of sounds, a kaleidoscope of colors, and an intoxicating array of aromas. 

This is where locals come to shop for everything under the sun – from fresh produce and seafood to clothing, handicrafts, and of course, an incredible variety of street food. If you want to experience authentic local culture and local traditions, this is your spot. Don’t be shy; try everything! Bargaining is expected, so put on your friendly haggling hat and enjoy the banter. 

Speaking of food, Dong Ba Market is the best place to sample some of Hue’s legendary local cuisine. Make sure to try Bun Bo Hue, the famous spicy beef noodle soup that originated right here. It’s a hearty, flavorful dish that will awaken your taste buds. And don’t forget Banh Beo, delicate steamed rice cakes with various toppings. Trust me, your stomach will thank you! 

Beyond the City: Nature and Rural Charm

Hue isn’t just about historical sites; it’s also surrounded by stunning natural beauty and charming rural villages. If you’re a nature lover, you’re in for a treat! 

• Thanh Toan Bridge:

 Just a short drive from the city center, you’ll find the charming Thanh Toan Bridge, an ancient tiled-roof bridge dating back to the 18th century. It’s a beautiful example of traditional Vietnamese architecture and offers a glimpse into rural life. The surrounding village is quaint, with rice paddies and friendly locals. It’s a peaceful escape from the urban hustle and bustle, a truly authentic experience. 

• Bach Ma National Park:

For the adventurous souls, a day trip to Bach Ma National Park is an absolute must. This sprawling park is a haven of biodiversity, with challenging hiking trails, stunning waterfalls (like the Five Lakes and Do Quyen waterfall), and panoramic views. • Lang Co Beach:

Located just a few kilometers from the city center, this vibrant village is where you can see traditional incense sticks being made by hand. The colorful bundles of incense drying in the sun make for fantastic photo opportunities, and you can even try your hand at making some yourself. It’s a wonderful way to connect with local traditions. 

• Hue Museum of Royal Fine Arts:

Housed within the former Dinh Palace, this museum showcases a remarkable collection of artifacts from the Nguyen Dynasty, including ceramics, clothing, and royal furniture. It’s a fascinating insight into the opulent lifestyle of the emperors and queens. 

• Ho Chi Minh City (Day Trip Possibility):

While Ho Chi Minh City is far to the South Vietnam, a historical trip from Hue to the Vinh Moc Tunnels and the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is a powerful experience. These sites offer a somber yet crucial understanding of the Vietnam War and its impact on the region. It’s a full day trip, but incredibly impactful. 

• Garden House (Nha Vuon):

Hue is famous for its elegant garden house structures, often passed down through generations. • The Perfume River:

We’ve talked about boat trips, but simply strolling along the banks of the Perfume River in the evening is a lovely experience. The Trang Tien Bridge lights up beautifully, and you can soak in the atmosphere of Hue by night. 

• Hue University National Conservatory of Music:

 If you’re keen on traditional Vietnamese music, you might be able to catch a performance here, or even learn about the instruments and techniques. 

• Tu Dam Pagoda:

Another significant pagoda in Hue, offering a peaceful retreat and a chance to observe local Buddhist practices. 

• Old Tiger Arena (Ho Quyen):  

This unique arena was where elephants and tigers fought for entertainment during the Nguyen Dynasty. A bit macabre, but certainly a part of Hue’s rich history. 

• Abandoned Water Park (Ho Thuy Tien):  

 For something a little offbeat and spooky, the abandoned water park is a popular spot for urban explorers and photographers. It’s got a wonderfully eerie vibe! 

3 days Itinerary in Hue

Day 1: Imperial Grandeur River Serenity 

• Morning (8:00 AM – 1:00 PM): The Imperial City of Hue 

Kick off your Hue adventure by stepping into a time machine! The Imperial City of Hue, also known as the Hue Citadelor Hue Imperial City, is a massive UNESCO World Heritage Site and an absolute must-see. This large complex was the heart of the Nguyen Dynasty and the former capital of Vietnam. It’s easy to spend a good 4-5 hours here, so wear comfy shoes! 

Start your exploration at the Ngo Mon Gate, the grand entrance. Inside, wander through vast courtyards to the majestic Thai Hoa Palace, where emperors once held their grand ceremonies. Imagine the pageantry! Don’t miss exploring parts of the Forbidden Purple City, the exclusive domain of the emperor and his family. While much was damaged during the Vietnam War, ongoing restoration efforts reveal its past splendor. You’ll see incredible ancient architecture and feel the weight of centuries of rich history. This is truly one of the best things to experience in Hue.

Head out of the Citadel and find a local eatery in the city center. This is your chance to dive into delicious cuisine! Seek out a spot for your first bowl of Bun Bo Hue, the famous spicy beef noodle soup. Trust me, it’s a game-changer and the ultimate comfort food after all that walking! 

• Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Perfume River Thien Mu Pagoda 

After lunch, make your way to the banks of the Perfume River. This poetic waterway is iconic to Hue. The best way to enjoy the afternoon is a leisurely boat ride (often on a traditional dragon boat) upriver to the serene Thien Mu Pagoda. 

Thien Mu Pagoda is Hue’s most iconic pagoda, recognizable by its seven-story octagonal tower. It’s a place of immense beauty and spiritual significance. Explore the peaceful grounds, see the giant bell, and the vintage Austin car that belonged to the monk Thich Quang Duc. The views of the Perfume River from here, especially as the sun begins its descent, are simply breathtaking. It’s a moment of calm and reflection amidst your busy travels. 

• Evening (6:00 PM onwards): Riverside Stroll Dinner 

As dusk settles, take a stroll along the banks of the Perfume River, enjoying the soft glow of the Trang Tien Bridge as it lights up. For dinner, explore the area around Le Loi street in the city center for a wide variety of restaurants, from casual local eateries to more upscale options. You could also find a spot offering traditional music performances on a dragon boat for a truly immersive experience! 

Day 2: Royal Legacies Market Buzz 

• Morning (8:00 AM – 1:00 PM): Imperial Royal Tombs Tour 

Day two is all about exploring the magnificent royal tombs of the Nguyen emperors, scattered outside the city center. Each tomb is a unique masterpiece, reflecting the emperor’s personality and an integral part of Hue’s cultural heritage. This makes for a fantastic half-day excursion.

Transportation Tip: The best way to visit the tombs is by hiring a motorbike with a driver for the day, a taxi, or joining a guided tour. They are spread out, so walking between them isn’t feasible. 

Entrance Fees: Each tomb typically has an entrance fee of ~100,000-150,000 VND. 

• Lunch (1:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Quick Bite on the Go 

Grab a quick lunch at a local spot near the tombs or head back towards the city center. 

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Dong Ba Market Thuy Xuan Incense Village 

Immerse yourself in the vibrant local life at Dong Ba Market, the largest market in Hue. This is a sensory overload in the best possible way! Explore sections dedicated to fresh produce, seafood, clothing, souvenirs, and of course, incredible street food. It’s a great place to experience authentic local culture and local traditions.  

Remember to try some Banh Beo (steamed rice cakes) and practice your bargaining skills! 

From the market, take a short ride (a cyclo is fun!) to the Thuy Xuan Incense Village. This colorful village is famous for its handmade incense sticks. You’ll see bundles of vibrant incense drying in the sun, making for fantastic photos. You can even try your hand at the craft and purchase some unique souvenirs. It’s a delightful glimpse into a traditional craft and a very photogenic spot, full of fragrant flowers in a different form! 

• Evening (6:00 PM onwards): Hue Culinary Class or Royal Dinner 

For dinner, consider a Hue local cuisine cooking class. Many tours offer classes that start with a market visit to pick ingredients, followed by a hands-on lesson to prepare dishes like Bun Bo Hue, Nem Lui (grilled pork skewers), or Banh Khoai. It’s an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. Alternatively, for a truly special evening, consider a “royal dinner” experience where you can enjoy traditional Hue cuisine in a setting reminiscent of the Nguyen  

Dynasty courts, sometimes accompanied by traditional music. 

Day 3: Nature’s Embrace or Cultural Deep Dive

You have a couple of fantastic options for your final day, depending on your preference! 

Option A: Nature Lovers’ Paradise – Bach Ma National Park or Lang Co Beach 

• Morning Afternoon (Full Day Trip): Bach Ma National Park

 If you’re a nature lover and enjoy hiking, a day trip to Bach Ma National Park is an excellent choice. This sprawling park offers cool climates, stunning waterfalls like the Five Lakes and Do Quyen waterfall, and challenging trekking trails. You’ll be surrounded by incredible lush greenery and natural beauty. It’s a refreshing escape from the city heat. Many tours from Hue can take you there, often including a picnic lunch.

 If beach relaxation is more your style, head to Lang Co Beach. This pristine stretch of sand is about an hour’s drive from Hue and offers beautiful turquoise waters and a relaxed atmosphere. The drive itself is scenic, especially if you go over a portion of the Hai Van Pass, known for its breathtaking coastal views. It’s a wonderful spot to unwind, swim, or simply enjoy the seaside. 

Option B: Deep Dive into Hue Culture

• Morning (8:30 AM – 12:00 PM): Thuy Bieu Village Thanh Toan Bridge

Take a leisurely bike ride or cyclo tour to Thuy Bieu Village, a tranquil rural area known for its pomelo gardens (a type of citrus fruit). It’s a fantastic way to see local life outside the bustling city center. Many tours combine this with a visit to the Thanh Toan Bridge, an ancient tiled roof bridge dating back to the 18th century, a beautiful example of traditional architecture in the midst of serene rural villages. You can wander around, see local farming, and truly soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

When to Visit: The Best Time 

The best time to visit Hue is during the dry season, from February to April. The weather is pleasant, with comfortable temperatures and less rain, making it ideal for exploring all the outdoor attractions. From May to  

August, it can get quite hot, and from September to January, it’s the rainy season, with potential for floods. 

Getting Around Hue

Getting around Hue is easy! The city center is quite walkable, but for longer distances, cyclos (pedicabs), motorbikes, and taxis are readily available. Renting a motorbike gives you the most freedom to explore at your own pace, especially for the royal tombs and rural areas. For a truly authentic experience, take a cyclo ride around the Imperial City – it’s a classic Hue experience! 

What to Eat: A Culinary Journey

Hue is a culinary paradise, and its delicious cuisine is a highlight for any traveler. Beyond Bun Bo Hue and Banh Beo, make sure to try: 

• Com Hen:

Clam rice, a simple yet incredibly flavorful dish. 

• Nem Lui:

 Grilled pork skewers wrapped in rice paper with fresh herbs and a delicious dipping sauce. 

• Banh Khoai:

 A crispy savory pancake, similar to a Banh Xeo but specific to Hue. 

• Che Hue:

 Sweet soups and desserts, often with various beans, fruits, and jellies. Perfect for a hot day!
