Bali Local Food

BALI, THE FOOD PARADISE !

Picnic areas, sanctuaries, temples, calm beaches, upscale eateries and cafes, and other locations ideal for sightseeing abound in Bali. Nothing really compares to the sunset when it comes to sightseeing. But another thing that is famous in Bali is balinese food. Which is why we have brought some of the most finger-licking delights of Bali that you would not want to miss out.

It is hardly a surprise that visitors to Bali rave about the island’s cuisine given its distinctive and pleasant variety of flavors. This is partly because the Indonesian cuisine in Bali differs greatly from that in the rest of the nation. Due to its predominantly Hindu population, Bali offers pork delicacies that are uncommon elsewhere in Indonesia.

It can be challenging to decide which foods to taste in order to be sure that you’ve had the best because this region has so much to offer in the form of fascinating culture and cuisine. So here are some of the best Balinese Main dishes that you must try.

Firstly, what is a warung ? ( local restaurant )

Warung is a small family-run restaurant in Indonesia. It is a popular place for locals and tourists to enjoy traditional Indonesian food. Warungs are typically found in local markets, shopping areas, and near tourist attractions. They are usually open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

You will generally eat for 2 USD with drinks !

The menu at a warung will vary depending on the region of Indonesia in which it is located. However, some common dishes that are often found on warung menus include:

– Nasi goreng: Fried rice with vegetables, meat, and spices
– Mie goreng: Fried noodles with vegetables, meat, and spices
– Sate lilit: Grilled skewers of minced meat, fish, or vegetables
– Bebek betutu: Roasted duck with spices
– Ayam betutu: Roasted chicken with spices
– Babi guling: Roasted suckling pig
– Lawar: A salad made with vegetables, meat, and spices
– Gado-gado: A salad made with vegetables, tofu, and tempeh
– Karedok: A salad made with vegetables, tofu, and peanut sauce
– Rujak: A fruit salad with a spicy dressing

Warungs are a great place to try traditional Indonesian food. The food is usually fresh and delicious, and the prices are very reasonable. If you are looking for a taste of authentic Indonesian cuisine, be sure to visit a warung.

– The food at warungs is usually cooked over a charcoal grill or in a wok.
– Warungs are often family-run businesses.
– The atmosphere at warungs is usually casual and relaxed.
– Warungs are a great place to people-watch and soak up the local culture.

If you are planning a trip to Indonesia, there is so much too discover, but in terms of food, you must add a warung to your list of places to eat. You won’t be disappointed!

What is the Balinese traditional food? List of typical dishes

1. Babi Guling

A traditional Balinese meal called Babi Guling, or roast suckling pig, deviates from the usual of Indonesian cuisine. Sometimes a whole pig . Pork is unavailable in most Muslim Indonesian regions, although Bali has plenty of it.

Babi Guling, which is typically a joyful dish, was previously only offered at formal religious events or sizable gatherings. However, this has changed due to the rise in tourists, and many Balinese restaurants now serve the meal frequently.

How is it prepared?
The pig (babi) is marinated in spices and slowly roasted over an open flame that is fed by coconut husks or wood on a rolling spit. As soon as it’s finished cooking, it’s served with steamed rice, a vegetable salad, pork crackling, and a few additional Balinese side dishes.

2. Nasi Campur Bali

Nasi campur bali is a traditional rice dish from Bali that includes steamed rice and a variety of side dishes, including grilled beef, chicken, tofu, tempe, bean sprouts, and sambal. In essence, it’s a Balinese sampling platter that is prepared slightly differently by each chef and restaurant.

Although nasi campur may be found all around Indonesia, it’s the special combination of traditional spices used in many Balinese meals that make this dish a must-try.

How is it prepared?
The dish is served as rice and side dishes. Side dishes include grilling meat, frying tofu and tempeh, and cooking other vegetables. Rice and side dishes are arranged in the plate that are served by topping the dish with sambal and fried egg on top.

3. Tum Ayam

Two recipes on this list use the method of wrapping food in banana leaves, one of which is tum. The leaf is stitched at one end in tum, which takes a somewhat different shape than pepes, which is the conventional way. A delicious mixture of finely minced chicken, spiced with herbs and spices, may be found in tum ayam. The parcel is steamed (or grilled) after being wrapped in banana leaves so that the tastes permeate the entire dish.

How is it prepared?
The chicken is often finely minced before being combined with a wide variety of spices and herbs known as bumbu genep by the Balinese. A base called bumbu genep is utilized in numerous other Balinese dishes. The chicken is then combined with spice mixture, wrapped in banana leaf, and steam-cooked.

4. Nasi Goreng

Nasi Goreng, which can be found throughout the entire region of Bali and other parts of Indonesia, is at the top of the list of foods you simply must eat. Additionally, it is not a costly snack and is even sold by roadside sellers day or night.

The subject of Nasi Goreng frequently comes up while discussing the candidates for Indonesia’s top national dish. Regular white rice must be stir-fried with a variety of spices and seasonings, such as tamarind, chile, sweet soy sauce, and garlic, which are unquestionably the most commonplace components ever.

How is it prepared?
Making it is quite simple, just as with regular fried rice recipes. Rice, kecap manis, and shrimp paste, if using, come before the chicken, garlic, chili, and onion. Rice grains should be cooked for a few minutes or until they begin to caramelize. You will be able to tell when it is finished because it smells so good.

5. Mie Goreng

In Indonesia, stir-fried noodles, also known as mie goreng, are immensely popular. It is a dish with a lot of flavor and a touch of heat. This recipe may look familiar since it is influenced by the Chinese cuisine chow mein. Egg noodles, soy sauce, veggies, and various types of meat are added in the mie goreng when it is made traditionally.

Due to how popular mie goreng is, developers were even inspired to create an instant ramen dish called Indomie. This dish is frequently prepared in every home and is quite simple to prepare. Why not learn how to cook this delectable dish so you may enjoy it even after you leave Bali?

How is it prepared?
Traditional preparations of mie goreng include using yellow wheat noodles, egg, veggies, chicken, beef, or seafood, along with chopped shallots, onions, and garlic. Other variations, however, can substitute dried quick noodles for fresh yellow wheat noodles.

6. Es Campur

Shaved ice is used as the base for the dessert es campur. Common toppings include avocado, nata de coco, grass jelly, and basil seeds. Coconut milk is poured to the ingredients, and then condensed milk is sprinkled on top for sweetness.

This colorful and refreshing dessert is a must-try when in Bali because it is perfect for the hot, humid weather there. From fancy restaurants to street vendors, es campur is available. No matter where you locate it, es campur will keep you cool and satisfy your sweet tooth.

How is it prepared?
Add glass jelly, nata de coco, basil seeds, avocado, and fermented cassava in a serving glass or serving bowl, top with shaved iced before drizzling it with sweet condensed milk and coco pandan syrup. Stir the dessert and enjoy eating!

Other Indonesian specialities !

When it comes to food in Bali, the list can go a mile long which we might not be able to cover. But because we can’t let you spoil your trip, here are some more Indonesian specialities that are our absolute favorites.

7. Jimbaran Seafood

Due to the island’s proximity to the ocean, seafood is a common delicacy on Bali. Delicious seafood can be found all around Bali, but Jimbaran beach is one of the best locations to savor a seafood feast. There are restaurants and market stalls providing a variety of fresh fish and seafood all along the shore.

Despite the fact that many western tourists like seafood served alone, I personally think it tastes best when served with nasi goreng, or Indonesian fried rice. If you enjoy seafood, you must not miss this experience while visiting Bali. I advise going to Jimbaran Beach in the early evening or late afternoon. Along the beach, tables have been put up to provide a breathtaking view of the setting sun.

8. Sambal Matah

In Balinese cuisine, sambal matah is a significant and frequently used Indonesian sauce or salsa. Chefs’ recipes differ, but the usual ingredients are garlic, chile peppers, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. It may occasionally also include additional ingredients like shallots, coconut oil, and shrimp paste.

In Bali, sambal matah is frequently used as a foundation or marinade for many foods. Although it isn’t a meal per se, you’re likely to encounter it frequently while savoring Bali’s many mouthwatering delicacies.

9. Bubur Sumsum

Although it can be eaten for breakfast or as a snack, bubur sumsum is frequently served as a traditional dessert. The essential ingredients in this dish are coconut milk, rice flour, and palm sugar syrup on top. Sweet potato dumplings are occasionally served with bubur sumsum.

Even though creating this dish is really simple, finding the proper consistency could require some practice. You may learn how to prepare this delicious treat by signing up for a cooking lesson in Bali.

10. Pisang Goreng

Indonesian for “fried” is goreng. A deep-fried banana with batter on it is called pisang goreng. It is a highly well-liked food that is available all around Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. You can buy this separately from many street vendors, but you can also get it in cafes or restaurants.

Even though eating pisang goreng with ice cream is not the conventional way to consume it, it is utterly delightful. Because it is so delicious, you will want more.

Bali belly is a common illness that affects travelers to Bali and other parts of Southeast Asia. It is caused by a bacteria called Escherichia coli (E. coli), which can contaminate food and water. Symptoms of Bali belly include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. In severe cases, Bali belly can lead to dehydration and hospitalization.

There are a few things you can do to avoid getting Bali belly:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. This is the most important step you can take to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Avoid eating street food. Street food is often not cooked properly and can be contaminated with bacteria.
Only drink bottled water or water that has been boiled. Tap water in Bali is not safe to drink.
Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat and seafood. Meat and seafood that is not cooked properly can contain harmful bacteria.
Get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid. These vaccines can help protect you from two of the most common causes of Bali belly.

WHO AM I ?

Hello !

I am Eric, a French Australian citizen based between Australia, Asia and Bali an I love to travel and experience the world. I generally like outdoor activities, wellness, great food and venues , party and real local adventures ! I am a Yoga practitioner and fitness lover

I created this blog because I love to travel and I want to share my experiences with others. I’ve been traveling since I was a child, and I’ve been to over 50 countries. I’ve seen some amazing things and met some amazing people, and I want to help others experience the same things.

I believe that travel is one of the best ways to learn about the world and about yourself. When you travel, you’re forced to step outside of your comfort zone and experience new things. You learn about different cultures, different religions, and different ways of life. You also learn about yourself, your strengths, and your weaknesses.

Travel can also be a great way to make new friends. When you’re traveling, you’re surrounded by people from all over the world, and you’re all in the same boat. You’re all there to explore and experience new things, and that can create a bond between people.
