Best activities in Mandalay Myanmar [ PRO TRAVEL BLOG 2025]

Hey there, fellow wanderlusters! I’ve just returned from an absolutely mind-blowing adventure in Mandalay, Myanmar, and I’m bursting to share all the juicy details with you. So, grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and let’s dive into the best things to do in this fascinating city that’s stolen my heart!

Mandalay is one of the major cities of Myanmar ( Second largest ) . I spent 4 days , and you don’t need more ( maybe 5 if you want to explore around the city ) . The city itself can be done in 2 days

I really like the ancient pagodas and the buddhist temple. This give a charm to the city , and I did really appreciate my short trip over there

What are the must see attractions in Mandalay

Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar, is a place where history comes alive, and every corner tells a story. As the former royal capital of Myanmar, this city is steeped in rich history and culture that’ll make your head spin faster than a Burmese puppet show (more on that later, I promise!).

First things first, let’s talk about the best time to visit this gem of Southeast Asia. Trust me, you don’t want to be caught in the sweltering heat or monsoon rains when you’re trying to explore all the amazing sights! The best time to visit Mandalay is between November and February. During these months, the weather is cooler and drier, making it perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

I was there in January, and let me tell you, it was absolutely perfect! The days were warm and sunny, and the nights were cool enough for a light jacket. Plus, the clear skies made for some killer sunset photos!

Let’s kick things off with the granddaddy of all Mandalay attractions – the Mandalay Palace. This massive complex was once the heart of the royal capital, and boy, does it show! As I strolled through the palace grounds, I couldn’t help but feel like I’d stepped back in time.

The palace is surrounded by a moat and high walls, giving it a fortress-like appearance. Inside, you’ll find beautiful wooden buildings, including the Great Golden Palace Monastery.

Don’t miss the watch tower – it offers a panoramic view of the entire complex and the city beyond. It’s the perfect place to snap some Instagram-worthy shots!Pro tip: Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Also, don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat – the Myanmar sun can be brutal!

Next up on our Mandalay adventure is the Kuthodaw Pagoda, home to what’s known as the “world’s largest book.” Now, before you start imagining a giant paperback, let me explain. This “book” consists of 729 marble slabs, each housed in its own small stupa. Each slab is inscribed with a page of Buddhist scriptures, creating a truly unique and awe-inspiring sight.

As I wandered through the rows of white stupas, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility. The central pagoda, with its golden spire, is a beautiful focal point for the complex. It’s a great place to sit and reflect, or simply marvel at the dedication it must have taken to create this incredible monument.

Fun fact: It would take an estimated 450 days to read the entire “book” out loud, reading 8 hours a day. Talk about a long story!

Alright, folks, get ready for one of the most magical experiences Mandalay has to offer – sunset at U Bein Bridge. This 1.2-kilometer-long structure is the oldest and longest teakwood bridge in the world, and let me tell you, it’s a sight to behold!I arrived at the bridge about an hour before sunset, and the atmosphere was electric.

Local people and tourists alike were strolling along the bridge, some fishing, others just enjoying the view. As the sun began to set, the sky exploded into a riot of oranges, pinks, and purples, reflecting off the calm waters of Taungthaman Lake.

Pro tip: For the best views, hire a small boat to take you out onto the lake. You’ll get an unobstructed view of the bridge silhouetted against the sunset – it’s absolutely breathtaking and perfect for those Instagram-worthy shots!

Next on our Mandalay bucket list is the Shwenandaw Monastery, also known as the Golden Palace Monastery. This stunning teakwood building is a masterpiece of traditional Burmese architecture and woodcarving. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the intricate carvings covering every surface.

Mythical creatures, floral patterns, and scenes from Buddhist mythology adorn the walls and ceilings. It’s like stepping into a wooden wonderland!

What makes this monastery even more special is its history. It was originally part of the royal palace in Amarapura, but was later moved to its current location. It’s one of the few surviving buildings from the original Mandalay Palace, having survived the bombings of World War II.

No trip to Mandalay would be complete without a visit to Mandalay Hill. This 240-meter-high hill is not only a major pilgrimage site but also offers some of the best views of the city and surrounding countryside.I decided to tackle the climb up the hill barefoot, as is the local custom.

Let me tell you, those 1,729 steps are no joke! But the experience of climbing alongside monks and local devotees, passing by numerous temples and pagodas along the way, was truly unforgettable. At the top, you’ll find the Sutaungpyei Pagoda, a beautiful golden stupa that seems to glow in the sunlight. But the real star of the show is the view.

As I stood at the top, catching my breath, I was treated to a 360-degree panorama of Mandalay and beyond. To the west, I could see the mighty Irrawaddy River snaking through the landscape, while to the east, the Shan Hills rose in the distance.

Pro tip: Time your visit for sunset. The view of the sun sinking below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the city, is simply magical.

For a true taste of local life in Mandalay, head to Zegyo Market. This bustling bazaar is the largest in the city and offers a sensory overload in the best possible way. As I wandered through the narrow aisles, I was surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. Stalls selling everything from fresh produce and spices to traditional textiles and handicrafts line the walkways.

The air is filled with the chatter of vendors and shoppers, the sizzle of street food being cooked, and the occasional honk of a motorbike trying to navigate the crowded lanes. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample some local food here.

I tried mohinga, a delicious fish soup that’s considered Myanmar’s national dish, and it was absolutely divine!

If you’re a fan of shiny things (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?), then you can’t miss the Jade Market. This open-air market is where local traders come to buy and sell jade, a stone that’s highly prized in Myanmar. As I walked through the market, I was amazed by the variety of jade on display.

From rough, uncut stones to beautifully polished pieces, the market is a treasure trove for jade enthusiasts. The atmosphere is electric, with traders examining stones with magnifying glasses and negotiating prices in rapid-fire Burmese. Even if you’re not in the market for jade, it’s a fascinating place to visit and observe local commerce in action.

For a refreshing break from the city, take a short trip to Dee Doke Waterfall. This hidden gem is about an hour’s drive from Mandalay and offers a perfect escape into nature. The hike to the waterfall is an adventure in itself, taking you through lush jungle and over rocky terrain.

But trust me, the payoff is worth it! As I rounded the final bend in the trail, I was greeted by the sight of crystal-clear turquoise pools cascading down the rocks. The main pool at the base of the falls is perfect for swimming, and I spent a blissful afternoon cooling off in the refreshing water.

Pro tip: Wear sturdy shoes for the hike and bring plenty of water. Also, don’t forget your swimsuit and a towel!

One of the most fascinating experiences I had in Mandalay was visiting a traditional gold leaf workshop. Gold leaf is used extensively in Myanmar, particularly for gilding Buddha statues and pagodas. I watched in awe as skilled artisans pounded gold into impossibly thin sheets using nothing but muscle power and traditional tools. The process is labor-intensive and requires incredible precision.

It takes about five hours of continuous hammering to produce a pack of 100 gold leaves, each only 0.000005 inches thick! The best part? I got to try my hand at applying gold leaf to a small Buddha statue. Let’s just say I won’t be quitting my day job anytime soon, but it was an incredible experience nonetheless!

For a dose of traditional Burmese entertainment, don’t miss a marionette show. These puppet performances have been a part of Myanmar’s cultural heritage for centuries, and they’re absolutely mesmerizing to watch. I attended a show at the Mandalay Marionettes Theater, and it was like stepping into another world.

The puppeteers manipulated their intricate marionettes with incredible skill, bringing to life tales from Burmese folklore and history. The show was accompanied by traditional music, adding to the magical atmosphere.Even if you don’t understand the language, the artistry and skill involved in the performance are truly impressive.

No visit to Mandalay would be complete without paying respects to the Mahamuni Buddha, one of the most revered Buddha images in Myanmar. The statue is housed in the Mahamuni Buddha Temple, a major pilgrimage site that draws devotees from all over the country.

As I entered the temple, I was struck by the sheer size of the Buddha image. Standing at 3.8 meters tall, the statue is covered in gold leaf applied by male devotees as an act of merit-making. Over the years, so much gold leaf has been applied that the statue has developed a lumpy appearance, with some areas covered in up to 15 centimeters of gold!

One of the most interesting rituals I observed was the daily face-washing ceremony. Every morning at 4 am, monks wash the face of the Buddha image and brush its teeth. It’s a beautiful display of devotion and respect.

Just a short boat ride up the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay lies the small town of Mingun, home to some truly impressive sights. The star attraction here is the Mingun Pahtodawgyi, an enormous unfinished pagoda that would have been the largest in the world had it been completed.

Mingun Pagoda 1

As I stood at the base of this massive brick structure, I couldn’t help but feel dwarfed by its sheer size. Even in its unfinished state, it’s an impressive sight. Climbing to the top (via a rather precarious set of stairs) rewards you with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the Irrawaddy River.

Don’t miss the Mingun Bell while you’re here. Weighing in at 90 tons, it’s the largest ringing bell in the world. And yes, you can ring it!

Across the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay lies Sagaing, a city famous for its numerous monasteries and pagodas. As I approached Sagaing Hill, I was greeted by the sight of hundreds of white and gold stupas dotting the landscape – it’s a truly breathtaking view.

One of the highlights of Sagaing is the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda, perched at the top of the hill. The climb up is steep, but the panoramic views of the surrounding area make it well worth the effort. From here, you can see the Irrawaddy River snaking through the landscape, with Mandalay visible in the distance. Sagaing is also known for its meditation centers, and if you’re interested in Buddhist practices, this is a great place to learn more.

For a complete change of pace, take a day trip to Pyin Oo Lwin, a charming hill station about 67 kilometers east of Mandalay. Founded by the British as a summer retreat to escape the heat of the plains, Pyin Oo Lwin retains much of its colonial charm. As I strolled through the town, I was struck by the beautiful colonial-era buildings, many of which have been well-preserved.

The Purcell Tower, a clock tower in the center of town, could easily be mistaken for something you’d find in an English village. One of the highlights of Pyin Oo Lwin is the National Kandawgyi Gardens, a beautiful botanical garden spread over 177 hectares. With its manicured lawns, colorful flower beds, and serene lakes, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing afternoon stroll.

Don’t leave Pyin Oo Lwin without taking a ride in one of the town’s famous stagecoaches. These horse-drawn carriages are a throwback to the colonial era and offer a unique way to explore the town.

As I sit here, reflecting on my time in Mandalay, I’m filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude. This city, with its golden pagodas, ancient monasteries, and warm-hearted people, has left an indelible mark on my heart. From watching the sun set over U Bein Bridge to climbing the steps of Mandalay Hill, from exploring bustling markets to experiencing the tranquility of ancient temples, Mandalay offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

I believe that travel is one of the best ways to learn about the world and about yourself. When you travel, you’re forced to step outside of your comfort zone and experience new things. You learn about different cultures, different religions, and different ways of life. You also learn about yourself, your strengths, and your weaknesses.

Travel can also be a great way to make new friends. When you’re traveling, you’re surrounded by people from all over the world, and you’re all in the same boat. You’re all there to explore and experience new things, and that can create a bond between people.

Let’s connect together!

I hope that my travel blog will inspire others to travel and to see the world. I also hope that it will help people to learn about different cultures and to become more open-minded.
