All right guys ! I spent 5 days in Kandy, then the train journey and I spent 6 days in Ella ( See my two blogs about that ).  

Kandy was nice, even if I prefer Ella. It is a popular spot in Sri Lanka and a great place with beautiful landscapes. You can explore national parks for a small entrance fee and you will get the best chance to spot amazing wild animals! 

All the local areas are amazing, with a lot of tea estates, and you will get a high chance to spot the majestic elephants!  

You will find many accomodations from luxury hotels to cheaper guest houses ( See my guide below ) . Kandy is definitively amazing with wonderful things to do ! 

Before we jump into the nitty-gritty, let me tell you why Kandy is an absolute must-visit on your Sri Lanka holiday. This city isn’t just another stop on your journey; it’s a destination that’ll leave you spellbound. Now, I know you’re itching to pack your bags and jet off to Kandy, but hold your horses! Timing is everything when it comes to making the most of your Sri Lanka trip. The good news is that Kandy is pretty much a year-round destination, thanks to its tropical climate. However, if you want to experience the city at its absolute best, aim for the months between December and April. During this period, you’ll enjoy dry and pleasant weather, perfect for exploring the city’s outdoor attractions and taking those Instagram-worthy shots.  

Plus, you’ll avoid the monsoon season, which can put a damper on your plans (pun intended!).If you’re a culture vulture like me, you might want to time your visit with the Esala Perahera festival, usually held in July or August. It’s a spectacular 10-day celebration featuring elaborate processions, traditional dances, and fire-walking rituals. Trust me, it’s a sight you won’t forget!

Best place for spiritual seekers! Let’s kick things off with the crown jewel of Kandy – the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This Buddhist temple is not just a religious site; it’s a spiritual experience that’ll leave you in awe. As I stepped into the temple complex, the air thick with the scent of incense and the sound of chanting monks, I felt like I’d been transported to another world. 

The temple houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha himself. While you can’t actually see the tooth (it’s kept in a golden casket), the atmosphere alone is worth the visit. The intricate architecture, colorful frescoes, and the devotion of the worshippers create a truly magical experience. 

Pro tip: Visit during the evening puja (prayer ceremony) for an extra dose of spiritual vibes. And don’t forget to dress modestly – cover those shoulders and knees, folks!

After the hustle and bustle of the temple, I was craving some green space, and boy, did the Royal Botanical Gardens deliver! Spread over 60 hectares, these gardens are a nature lover’s paradise. As I strolled along the palm-lined avenues, I couldn’t help but feel like royalty (after all, these were once reserved for Kandyan kings). 

The highlight for me was the giant Java Fig tree, its sprawling canopy providing a perfect spot for a picnic. And if you’re a plant nerd like me, you’ll go gaga over the orchid house with its collection of over 300 varieties.Fun fact: The gardens played a crucial role during World War II when they were used to cultivate rubber trees for the Allied war effort. Talk about plants with a purpose! 

3. Kandy Lake: A Scenic Stroll

No visit to Kandy is complete without a leisurely walk around Kandy Lake. This artificial lake, created in 1807 by the last king of Kandy, is the perfect spot for a morning jog or an evening stroll. As I circled the lake, the sight of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic reflected in the calm waters was simply breathtaking.Keep an eye out for the island in the middle of the lake – legend has it that it was used as the king’s personal harem. Oh, the stories these waters could tell!

As a self-proclaimed tea addict, I couldn’t resist a visit to the Ceylon Tea Museum. Housed in a former tea factory, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lanka’s tea industry.  

From antique tea-processing machinery to an actual tea tasting session, it’s a brew-lover’s dream come true.The panoramic views of Kandy from the museum’s top floor are the cherry on top (or should I say, the tea leaf in the cup?). Trust me, after this visit, you’ll never look at your morning cuppa the same way again! 

5. Udawattakele Forest Reserve: Into the Wild

For those of you who like to get off the beaten path, the Udawattakele Forest Reserve is a hidden gem. This dense tropical forest, right in the heart of Kandy, was once a pleasure garden for Kandyan royalty. Today, it’s a sanctuary for a variety of flora and fauna. 

As I hiked through the forest, the calls of exotic birds and the occasional rustle in the undergrowth kept me on my toes. Keep your eyes peeled for purple-faced langurs swinging through the trees – they’re quite the acrobats! 

6. Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue: Panoramic Views Galore

If you’re up for a bit of a climb (and trust me, it’s worth it), head to the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue. This giant white Buddha overlooks the city and offers some of the best panoramic views of Kandy. 

As I huffed and puffed my way up the stairs (note to self: more cardio before the next trip), I was rewarded with a breathtaking vista of the city, the surrounding hills, and Kandy Lake. It’s especially magical at sunset when the city lights start to twinkle below.

For a taste of local life (literally and figuratively), dive into the bustling Kandy Market. This vibrant marketplace is a riot of colors, smells, and flavors. From exotic fruits and vegetables to aromatic spices and ayurvedic herbs, it’s a foodie’s paradise.I couldn’t resist trying some of the street food on offer – the kottu roti (chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables and spices) was to die for! Just remember to bring your haggling A-game; the vendors here love a good bargain!

Now, I know what you’re thinking – a railway station? Really, Eric? But hear me out!  

The Peradeniya Railway Station is not just any old station; it’s the gateway to one of the most scenic train rides in the world.Hop on a train to Ella or Nuwara Eliya, and prepare for a journey through lush tea plantations, misty mountains, and picturesque villages. The famous nine arch bridge is a highlight of this route – it’s so photogenic, it’s practically begging to be on your Instagram feed!

For a dose of history off the typical tourist trail, head to the Gadaladeniya Temple. This 14th-century temple is a unique blend of Sinhalese and South Indian architectural styles.

If you’re an animal lover like me, a safari in Minneriya National Park is a must. Just a couple of hours from Kandy, this park is famous for its large herds of wild elephants.I was lucky enough to witness “The Gathering” – one of the largest assemblies of Asian elephants in the world. 

Watching hundreds of these gentle giants socializing, bathing, and playing by the reservoir was a truly unforgettable experience. Keep your eyes peeled for other wildlife too – I spotted some cheeky monkeys and even a elusive leopard!
