Best Surf and Yoga Retreats in Bali 2025

Hi guys!

My name is Eric and I am a Yoga practitioner, Yoga teacher and I surf too from time to time. On top of that, I live in Bali! (exactly Canggu) so needless to say, I know the subject pretty well. You can check my blog, who is one of the best in the world about Travel and Yoga and surely the best for Bali Yoga and spiritual practices.

My best Surf and Yoga retreats in Bali are The Chill house in Canggu and Padang Padang surf camp in Uluwatu.

So now, you basically have two options: CANGGU and ULUWATU. As I lived in Canggu, my advice might be a little bit biased of course, but both cities are great. However, if you are more into Yoga than surfing, I would choose Canggu (there are better Yoga studios in Canggu).

For surfing: Canggu is a small village, so it gets so busy sometimes. There is more space in Uluwatu.

You can not afford a Surf and Yoga retreat ? no problem!

Find a cheap guest house on booking.com (you can filter by the cheapest), then you can rent a board for cheap at the beach. Then for Yoga you can use class passes to have very cheap classes everyday . Of course , it is not a real surf and Yoga retreat and you won’t get the community vibe, but it is a cheap option to surf and Yoga at the same tine

Is Bali good for surfing ? Yes it is alright . This is not Hawaii, and I personally prefer Lombok . But the waves are pretty good !

Here’s the thing, folks, when you hear “Bali,” what’s the first image that pops into your head? Is it endless rice paddies, the scent of incense wafting through the air, or perhaps the roar of perfect waves crashing on a pristine beach? For me, it’s all of that and more, especially when you throw in the incredible zen of a yoga retreat. And guess what? I’ve been lucky enough to call this magical island home for a while now, living that surf yoga dream, and let me tell you, it’s everything you imagine and then some!

The vibe is unbeatable, a perfect blend of high-energy stoke and chilled-out wellness. Their instructors are absolute legends, and they know the local breaks like the back of their hand. You’ll be hitting up spots like Dreamland and Bingin for lessons, and if you’re a pro, maybe even the legendary Padang Padang itself. Looking for a touch of luxury with your surf yoga? Uluwatu Surf Villas is the answer. This is where you go for a high-end, yet still incredibly authentic, experience. Their Morning Light Yoga Studio is a destination in itself, with daily classes open to guests and visitors alike. I’ve been to a few of their sunset sessions, and they’re pure magic. They partner with local surf instructors to provide incredible lessons, so you get the best of both worlds. This is one of the top yoga retreats Bali has to offer, especially if you want to spoil yourself with a beautiful villa and world-class facilities.

This is the classic Bali surfer’s dilemma! Canggu and Uluwatu offer fundamentally different surfing experiences. The best choice depends entirely on your skill level, preferred wave type, and desired travel vibe.

Here is a breakdown of the pros and cons for surfing in each area:

Canggu, on the west coast of Bali, is the go-to spot for social surfing, catering heavily to beginners and intermediates.

Pros for Surfing Cons for Surfing
All Skill Levels: Spots like Batu Bolong offer mellow, forgiving waves, which is the best place for longboarders and those taking their first surf lessons. Echo Beach has punchier waves for intermediatesCrowds: The waves are highly accessible, leading to notoriously crowded lineups, especially at Pantai Batu Bolong and Berawa.
Accessibility: Breaks are close to the beach and generally have a forgiving sandy or soft reef bottom, making wipeouts less dangerous than on the sharp coral of Uluwatu. Variable Quality: Breaks are often beach breaks or a mixture of sand/flat reef. The sandbanks can shift, and the water quality can be murky during the rainy season (Nov-Mar) due to river runoff.
Year-Round Surf: Canggu’s breaks are consistent and offer fun waves even when the large dry season swells don’t hit the coast. Mid-day Wind: The coastline angle means onshore winds often “blow out” the surf by mid-morning, making the early sessions the best time
Vibe and Infrastructure: It’s a lively, social, and trendy area. You have easy access to rentals, surf schools, and cafes right on the black sand beachTraffic: Getting to and from the beaches can be a nightmare due to congestion in the Canggu area

Incoming Waves

Uluwatu, situated on the rugged Bukit Peninsula, is famed for its dramatic cliffs and serious, world-class reef breaks.

Pros for Surfing Cons for Surfing
World-Class Waves: This is the best place for experienced surfers. Breaks like Uluwatu Main Peak, Padang Padang Left (Bali’s Pipeline), and Bingin offer long, powerful, and often barreling left-hand waves. Reef Breaks and Hazards: The waves break over sharp coral reefs, meaning a wipeout can result in serious cuts. Reef boots are highly recommended.
Consistency & Size: The Bukit Peninsula captures every swell, meaning even on smaller days, breaks like Nyang Nyang will still have rideable waves. It can also handle massive swells that close out Canggu. Skill Requirement: The main spots—Uluwatu, Padang Padang Left, and Impossibles—are strictly for advanced surfers or experts. Beginners should look to Baby Padang or Dreamland.
Offshore Winds (Dry Season): During the dry season (April-October), the prevailing trade winds are offshore here, creating glassy, perfect wave conditions for the best surf spotsAccessibility: Access to the water often involves long paddle-outs and navigating caves or steep cliff stairs, which is less convenient than Canggu’s easy beach entry.
Scenery and Atmosphere: The dramatic cliffside views and white sand beaches (like Bingin) are stunning beaches, creating a more chill, surfer-centric atmosphere focused purely on the ocean. Crowds (at main spots): While the area is generally less “busy” than Canggu, the lineups at the famous breaks like Uluwatu and Padang Padang can be fiercely competitive.

The Verdict

  • Choose Canggu if you are a beginner to intermediate surfer looking for a fun, social atmosphere, sandy-bottom breaks for practice, and want to be close to nightlife and cafes.
  • Choose Uluwatu if you are an intermediate to advanced surfer seeking powerful, challenging waves, breathtaking scenery, and a culture focused on surfing excellence
