HOW TO AVOID BALI BELLY? (LOCAL BALINESE “TURISTA”)

Some of you might be laughing right now, but this is a serious topic. It happened to me a few times in Bali, and this could end up being a bad holiday. It could be linked to food in restaurants.
Bali Belly is a common stomach upset that can affect travelers to Bali, Indonesia. It is caused by a variety of bacteria and viruses that are found in the local food and water. Symptoms of Bali Belly can include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever.
There are a number of things you can do to avoid Bali Belly, including:
- Wash your hands frequently. This is the most important thing you can do to prevent Bali Belly. Make sure to wash your hands before eating, after using the bathroom, and after touching animals.
- Drink only bottled water. Do not drink tap water or water from ice machines. Bottled water is readily available in Bali, and it is safe to drink.
- Be careful about what you eat. Avoid eating raw or undercooked food, and avoid food that has been sitting out in the sun. Stick to cooked food that is hot and fresh. This applies even when dining at top restaurants.
- Be careful about what you eat at street vendors. Street food is a popular part of the Balinese culture, but it is also a common source of Bali Belly. Be sure to choose street vendors that are clean and reputable.
- Take probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria that can help to improve your digestive health. Taking probiotics can help to reduce your risk of developing Bali Belly.
If you do get Bali Belly, there are a few things you can do to relieve your symptoms. These include:
- Drink plenty of fluids. This will help to prevent dehydration.
- Take over-the-counter medications for diarrhea and vomiting. These medications can help to relieve your symptoms and make you feel better.
- See a doctor if your symptoms do not improve. In some cases, Bali Belly can lead to more serious complications, such as dehydration or electrolyte imbalances. If your symptoms do not improve after a few days, or if you develop any other symptoms, see a doctor.
By following these tips, you can help to reduce your risk of developing Bali Belly, allowing you to fully enjoy the great food and experiences in Canggu.
If you have a very high fever, it could be Dengue. So you MUST call a doctor ASAP. I had dengue too (yes, I am lucky…) and it was very intense. It can be deadly.
